SCULPTURES &
SESSIONS
ABOUT THE PRACTICE
The working methods are a part of my long-standing work in somatic-dance practices, through which practitioners/participants reach mindfulness, become more observative and present in their bodies. It leads people to connect with their senses and through senses with other people. In time, I started to combine the somatic work with clay and explored the practice’s vast potentials.
The clay practice was carried out in pairs or groups. With a properly adjusted approach and atmosphere, the process took about 40 min (depending on the size of the group and the occasion). This included introduction + preparation for the work + practice + exchange of impressions (feedback) + other agreements.
Participants were guided to engage in a “movement conversation of hands”, holding the clay between them, by which they simultaneously molded and formed it. In this way, a clay object (a “sculpture”) grew spontaneously between their hands. The focus was not on the figurative form of the sculpture, but on the bodily (non-verbal) communication between the participants, and the practice required no particular artistic skills. The clay is the medium, and its final form is the inevitable consequence of the exchange and contact. In this way, the participants created objects that are not meaningful by their external visual image, but by the dynamics, presence, intention and mutual attention stored in them. Participants are also considered the authors and gave their sculptures their own titles.

“It seemed to me that that force was just flowing – you couldn’t control it at all. You didn’t know whether to surrender to it or not.”
“At the end, it didn’t feel like it concluded, but rather just dropped. You don’t really know when it’s going to end and it’s interesting to see when it does. “
”I’ve noticed that I’ve listened a lot more (to myself and the other) when we were in pairs than in a group – I’m not sure, maybe more out of politeness
… or maybe that shouldn’t be called listening …”

»It’s interesting how this is really about touch, how much you feel the other person«.
»And also the attention you get when for example you feel that pieces could break off – and you don’t want the relation to break – so, you start seeking what to do, how will we go on.«
»Yes, it’s really about building something together.

»The push and pull part was very fun.«
»It was difficult to do it together when people wanted to go in different direction.«
»The two of us first started with a collaboration and then started a little fight.«
»Actually, agreeing is pleasant, but maybe also slightly boring. Having different ideas and directions makes it more difficult, challenging, but also more dynamic.«
»So, can we for example see disagreements or differences as simply dynamics of/in relationships? Could it help us understand and embrace different relations we have with people in life through this?«
»The distinction between dynamic and fight may be that in a fight people also get angry.«
»Maybe seeing it as just-dynamics and not something too important can also be a way of dealing with anger – like, relaxing a bit and making space for processing something together, rather than insisting on ‘my way’ … maybe we get angry because we focus too much on my (way, idea) – not being able to do/get it just my way – and then we don’t feel happy that we do something with someone … Maybe?«

“My eyes shut out of the light of the clay and I felt the weight of the clay as it came to rest on my right hand.
The fingers of my left hand began to work the wet piece of earth before me.
I recalled at that time the lesson learned to me by All My relations.
I expressed gratitude for what my ancestors were in wonder of.
The soaring of the eagle, the fragrance of the flowers, the taste of field berries, the ability to hear a love song.
These things were on my mind and raced through my heart, all the while I worked the clay.
Unity!
A wonderful exercise”

“It was good to do this, I feel that we are much more, or differently connected now.”
“It was actually much more interesting that we didn’t know where we should end up, that it wasn’t assigned, and so we arrived somewhere and made something out of nothing, just by following what’s there in the moment.”
“It also reminds us that we could meet more often – maybe we can use this as a starting point and then also exchange who keeps the sculpture till the next meeting.”

To Ma-G, one of the numerous homeless Inuits on the streets of Montreal:
Ma-G, you probably think I forgot you the very minute I left your corner, but in fact, you have a special place in my heart … I will never forget the warmth of your skin when we were holding hands and I kissed your face; how you put aside that coin I had hid in the clay, and just wanted to keep touching my hand through clay – you were so much more intelligent than me, showing me that we need no insignificant detour/trick/medium to get to the point… that sharing presence and being-together is not just “enough”, but is exactly what is healing for all of us. This little sculpture surely is a materialization of your sense: it is your art piece. At the time I met you, there was a big international dance festival (FTA) in Montreal and majority of professional dancers would probably find it more important to mingle with producers in attempt to build their name – well, I found it more important to sit next to you with all my name is made of. When you were telling me I was strong, I though, if I’m strong then English or any other language lacks the word for what you are!! You shared the tears in your eyes when I was leaving, I never was courageous enough to share with you how I cried for the whole following afternoon… I send you my touch, smiles and trust in you through time and space: stay healthy my dear woman, stay safe!

“It took me back to the very beginning of our friendship, when we often danced together – we haven’t since then. A playful, almost childlike feeling has arisen in me. It also triggered a lot of memories of where and what we used to do together.”
“The weight of the clay has made this relationship very tangible – you know you have it, but with clay it becomes very concrete. We’ve known each other for a long time, but at the same time we were also in this very moment, searching …”
“At a certain point I was almost completely used to that clay between our hands and when a little piece of it fell on the floor, I didn’t even notice, I was surprised when I saw it lying there. … You become aware of this lost part that maybe without the clay you wouldn’t have.”

“I was surprised, I didn’t expect so much movement. At first, I thought it was going to be a classic workshop where the leader tells you what and how to do/make. But here you realize how much of yourself and your imagination you have to invest – that you’re allowed and able to do it self initiatively. It also made me think how much we actually feel each other. At first, you are a bit afraid, because as a family you are expected to know each other – and what if it turns out differently. So, we were both quite surprised how much we were actually in sync, especially the two of us, since we are quite different and both have strong personalities, but here we were spontaneously synchronized.”

“We had a very nice time and I was still thinking later about how something was very different. As a parent, you tend to be absent from your own things when you have a child, because you are like a cat on the lookout, constantly alert and just watching to see where she [the child] is. You are completely subordinated to controlling the situation. But here I could trust that she was there and everything was fine and I could be present within myself, and with Tomaž. Usually our relationship flows completely through her, but here it was that she was part of it and we could feel each other. And you know, that there is us as well – at other times we don’t feel each other the same way we could here. I realized that this combination is possible and that at the same time it was important for her to see/experience that the two of us also have a relationship of our own, that we can have each other beside her – and that she let it be that way. I think you also did a really nice job of how you treated her too, because she was really surprisingly OK. Even later on, when we went to a picnic with other people, she was very calm, she didn’t make any trouble, and when we were leaving we immediately agreed to get dressed and go and she didn’t try to break/go around or the agreement. … I saw that it didn’t matter if she wasn’t with her hands in the clay all the time: she was there and it was very dear to me that she was there. Because she is part of it: of us.”

“Fun. At first it took us a while to let go, to catch on, but then it just flowed. … I enjoyed it most when we had our eyes closed, because we could really feel each other: when I could get a more sensory perception of what was happening. That was also when they could put most of their feelings in. In the other exercises there was so much other coordination – well, like in life, when everything is so full of daily tasks and you feel less about each other.”

“Something has changed … like when you fall in love and there is just this nice feeling, something beautiful … appreciation of life. It opens this moment when we say “yes” to this opening … Surely I have the memory, but I rarely visit this place. It provided space for this to be. … For couples that have been long time together, it can be scary, since you are afraid that this is no longer there. And we are rarely together without any pragmatism involved – that it is “about nothing”, no practical theme, no to-do, to-arrange, to-agree-upon. It was nice to remember this feeling with him.
There is also this that we met through material – through mother Earth – it was like the first contact, as if you don’t know the person. …. When we were trying to pick the little cones, I felt a strong charge in our fingers – I felt I was learning a lot about her “fingers”, about the attitude. … And the tasks also provided the pleasure of figuring out her understanding of the rule. I felt I was offering my understanding, like: “I understood your understanding, or whether you agreed with mine”. Of course, you also try to “verbalize” through movement, but there were things beyond verbal – just understanding the energy.
The gravity, the weight of the clay also challenged us: there comes this question of who holds it (especially when it becomes heavy). At first I felt like it’s somehow my duty as a man to hold it, but I didn’t really feel like it. But eventually we managed to distribute this … responsibility?
I also notices how those little cones can be deceptive. You soon realize that it’s not so easy to pick them, and what is more, the more you go on, you think “oh, now I already know it”, but actually it doesn’t get any easier with the next/last ones. Each pick demands its own here-and-now, figuring out live… It triggered the question of where fun comes from … And I believe it comes from the creation itself.
I was struggling with this “competition” part. I don’t like competitive situations, I don’t want to compete. So, it was for me to observe how do I cope with this competitive situation. … Competition is actually much more fun when it’s not about winning or losing, but about cooperation: finding out what is better for this situation.”
